///LINDA LUISE BROWN : PAINTER

Location: Charlotte, NC
Linda Luise Brown is a painter, teacher and writer, with over twenty-five years' experience as a professional artist, and an extensive list of national and regional exhibitions. Her work is abstract and painterly, with color as a motivating force. This approach stems primarily from her study of mid-twentieth century artists, Wassily Kandinsky, Roberto Matta, and Arshile Gorky, whose work remains influential today. These artists explored the language of color, and conjured images, evoked memories and provoked associations, both universal and personal. Brown composes her work by contrasting fields of color and texture, with bold colors and shapes, juxtaposed with subtle variations. Though her paintings are non-representational, subconscious and subliminal, Brown often alludes to landscape forms and patterns, and uses calligraphic marks to animate the composition. The process of painting in layers allows oil glazes and transparencies to contribute to the final painterly surface, which she re-works, wet-on-wet. Keeping the chroma as fresh and pure as possible, Brown allows chance to permeate the work, seeking a balance between order and serendipity.
