Originally from New York, Alex completed his BFA at Syracuse University. Upon graduation, he traveled and studied in Paris, London, and Florence. He has been in Charlotte since 1980. He is a narrative painter whose work reflects the social and political concerns of many post-modern artists, such as Edward Hopper. Alex derives his subject matter from history, mythology, religion, and his own personal physical reality. He cites the great narrative traditons of the Renaissance painters and modern painters, including Balthus, Max Beckmann, and Jacob Lawrence, as important artistic influences.
