Charles earned two degrees in architecture, but  eventually turned his back on a successful career as a partner in a prestigious architctural firm to pursue what he felt were his true passions: painting and teaching. He again returned to school and earned an MFA in painting at Pennsylvania State University. He views his artwork as residing in the world of the visual uncanny, a realm of repressed memories concealed within the propriety of domestic stability. He evokes the uncanny through the creation of parallel worlds in which the voyeuristic impulse becomes the vehicle for cleansing the mind of superficial ideals, allowing the viewer to eavesdrop on suppressed internal voices. Charles intends the viewer to discover their real self through the ambiguous visual texts of his paintings.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
