///J. MICHAEL SIMPSON : DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY, VIDEO AND PAINTING
Location: Rock Hill, SC
My work with painting and video, presented as installations, explores the paradox of reality in contemporary existence. Though current technology allows us to virtually “re-live” any given moment, ironically, that moment can never actually be again. To get inside the paradox I have chosen to focus on one place; a white water river in northwest South Carolina. Specific sites along the river are documented with GPS readings and video. In order to focus on one moment the video is edited into two-second fragments that are then divided into five still images that are transposed into five paintings. Each painting reveals a moment within that time fragment. So the light of a moment was digitally extracted and remade into light and projected onto a canvas to make a painting. Though original moments can never be again, its virtual/physical transcriptions and reconstructions shape the very nature of contemporary existence.
