On a quick walk through the galleries, I went in search of some artists to find out what they would be working on this Saturday, March 6th when their doors will be open to the public for Open Studio Saturday. I quickly found three willing artists to give me a brief glimpse into what their future holds tomorrow...

Yesterday there was a knock on the office door and I was the lucky one to answer, it was Darren Goins, 11-Month affiliate artist looking for “an extra set of hands.” Darren and I walked down to his studio and as I turned the corner, I was thrilled to see two plexi glass canvas circles hanging on the wall, backlit with neon.

THE GABI AWARD

Joan Bankemper, Center Alumni has been named the first recipient of the Gabi Award from McColl Center for Visual Art. This new award was created to promote the connection of community service and the arts, a hallmark of programs at the Center.

If you missed the opening reception and chance to meet our resident artists and want to learn more, you can! Join two of our resident artists at the Mint Museum on Randolph Road, Tuesday, February 2nd from 7 to 8:30 PM as part of the Artist Forum Series.

In order to shed some light on an upcoming performance piece, I decided to visit the artist himself, Shaun Leonardo, current artist-in-residence. In his studio on the 2nd floor with windows facing the uptown skyline, Shaun turned the music down, took a break from his tireless drawing and sat down with me to offer some perspective on his first, solo stage performance scheduled the night of the Center’s next opening reception, January 29.
