Thank you to everyone who made it to the Palate to Palette 2009, the evening was a great success for the Contemporaries of McColl Center for Visual Art! There were over 200 people who made it to the event and participated in the wine and art pairings, we even had two beer pairings this year, compliments of Olde Mecklenburg Brewery (OMB).

Current Artist-in-Residence (AIR) Khaled Hafez was one of our ten participating artists who was paired with OMB Kölsner. Why? Well, Kölsner beer is a traditional German beer, geographically rooted to the city of Cologne (Koln.) Recreated by OMB, this Kölsner adheres strictly to the original German Beer Purity Law created in 1516, the “Reinheitsgebot.” Just as Kölsner is an iconic and culturally significant symbol of Cologne, beer is an imbedded part of Egyptian culture. Khaled Hafez was paired with OMB Kölsner because he is a Cairo-based artist who infuses his collage and paintings with iconography closes tied to his roots.

Want to learn more about Hafez? The Contemporaries' next event includes an artist talk facilitated by artist Khaled Hafez. He'll lead a discussion while referencing his own artwork and how it explores dichotomies existing in the international system of commodities. So if you missed Palate to Palette 2009, or you made it and can’t wait to visit us again, join us here at the Center on Thursday, November 12 at 6 PM as the Contemporaries partner with the World Affairs Council’s affiliate group, The Magellan Society.
