TRANSFORMATION

Current Winter 2011 Artist-in-Residence, John Osorio-Buck, worked with 30 students from a Myers Park High School photography class to create a collaborative work of art. The project started with a visit to McColl Center for Visual Art in February 2011 where the students had the opportunity to meet with John Osorio-Buck in his studio, walk through his exhibition in the Center's main gallery and learn more about his work during a formal presentation led by the artist.

After the presentation, Osorio-Buck, the students and their teacher, Lisa Holder (CMS Art Teacher-in-Residence alumna) discussed working together on a collaborative project in which students would contribute photographs for Osorio-Buck to create a culminating sculpture, integrating imagery created by the students.

To create a cohesive body of work, students settled on the concept of transformation after being inspired by Osorio-Buck's exploration of cities in transformation.  Each student considered what “transformation” meant to them and submitted photographs that would be selected for inclusion in the project.  After a review/critique by the artist, students self-selected their final images whose vivid imagery included a half-eaten peach and images of a lost childhood. The student’s photographs were printed on acetate and carefully installed on a geometric sculpture constructed by John.

The final work of art will be unveiled during a  5 pm reception on March 15, 2011 at Myers Park High School in an exhibition titled: Transformation.

This project was funded by an education grant from the Arts and Science Council.
